CO2 omissions into the atmosphere are causing a rise in global temperatures, leading to multiple means of environmental degradation. Glaciers and ice caps are melting as a result of global warming which is causing sea levels to rise. This poses an immediate threat to us all, especially as, according to a report by the United Nations entitled ‘The Climate Crises – A Race We Can Win’, 40% of the world’s population live within 100km of a coast. This report also states that if we continue as we are without taking action, entire districts of big cities such as New York and Shanghai could be underwater within our lifetimes. Global warming causes many other natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes and forest fires, in fact, 90% of disasters are now classed as weather – and – climate related, not only costing the world economy 520 billion USD per year, but resulting in mass destruction, injury and loss of life.  

However, it is not too late to slow down the effects of global warming and stop temperatures rising further, but action needs to be taken now.

A huge amount of CO2 is released as a result of oil, coal and gas production, therefore switching to renewable energy sources would greatly reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Ireland is currently approximately 30% dependent on renewable energy sources and the national aim is to be 70% dependent on renewable energy by 2030. This would greatly reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere which would slow the effects of global warming.

As an organisation collecting data for the development of offshore wind farms, Green Rebel are taking steps to fight against the climate crisis.  Not only are Green Rebel working to build up alternative energy sources to protect our planet, but they are building an eco-friendly workplace. For example; Green Rebel made sure to acquire the most CO2 efficient survey aircraft of its kind on the market for their aerial surveys; their multi-client approach to data collection means eliminating wasteful overlap of resources used and minimising ecological disruption; Green Rebel currently own two electric company cars, and they are planning to have only electric company cars in the near future when they set up charging ports at their base in Crosshaven. If individuals and organisations were to develop ways to reduce their carbon footprint and adopt more eco-friendly practices, together we could heal our planet!
